Further Education Women in Engineering and Construction (FEWec)
The FEWec project was a partnership between JIVE and Women and Manual Trades to research the number of women lecturers, trainers and technicians that are delivering vocational training in construction and engineering. The project was funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and ran from March 2006 “ December 2007.
The Project purpose was :
- To research the number of women who are teaching construction and engineering in England
- To provide opportunities for women working in colleges and training providers to network with each other
- To improve working practices and help share best practice
- To advertise work opportunities
- To address the isolation women experience when working in these departments
The project will raised awareness of the low numbers of women teaching construction and engineering. It improved the retention of existing women through creating networking opportunities. It also produced a booklet showcasing the work of women lecturers in Construction.
Women lecturers/trainers and technicians provide good role models for the men and women that they teach. Their presence in colleges and training providers help to challenge negative perceptions of women working in the industry. Women and Manual Trades and JIVE are aware that currently there are very few women teaching in these fields. Presently we do not have statistics on the actual numbers of women employed in delivering vocational qualifications in construction and engineering. This project addresses the issues and hopes to identify areas for development in the future.
This project has now ended but if you would like more information about the project please email r.fulton@wamt.org
